FAQ

  • Who are your classes for?

I’m interested in sharing my art and method with those who wish to be more empowered in their life and who wish to cultivate a deep sense of harmony and vitality in their every moment.

If you are meak and a “people pleaser” our work together will likely look like learning to be more assertive in your interactions. If you’re overbearing and run over the people in your life, we’ll likely learn to be less resistant and forceful. Each person is unique and your Tai Chi will manifest differently, but ultimately, you’ll become more free and versatile in your life and actions … regardless of where you apply our work in your life.

  • Why bother learning a Martial Art?

Training in a martial art is about developing your body, mind and spirit so that you can maintain your harmony and calm under any set of circumstances or conditions. Whether it’s stress in relationship, with a family member or loved one, driving your car, work stress, or an actual violent encounter, you train yourself to stay with the discomfort, maintaining your center and your sense of balance to better connect and transform the situations or energy around and inside you.

  • Are Martial Arts all about violence and beating people up?

I don’t want to fight or be violent, however conflict will naturally arise in life. It is the goal of my training to learn to better stay connected and develop a flow with the difficulty that arises in my life, rather than getting stuck in the conflict. I want to be 100% responsible in my life , meaning, I always want to be completely able to respond to 100% of the issues that arise in my life in a natural and easeful sort of way.

Think of it like water … when water is flowing and hits an obstruction it doesn’t have to stop and think about what best to do. It simply keeps flowing and bypasses whatever the blockage may be. It flows left, right, up or down. It can erode the issue until it disappears, it can cut through it.

In Tai Chi we endeavor to be like water, never becoming stuck or lost in the point of conflict or stress but rather bypassing it, transforming and flowing onward.

  • Why do you only offer year long courses?

I offer year long courses because Tai Chi and Qigong take time to develop as an art and skill. It takes most people 3 to 6 months just to learn the physical choreography and most won’t be able to make it all the way through without some leading or guidance. Then it takes another few months to be able to do it completely alone without the guidance of a teacher. And then, your left with 3 more months to start to learn the most preliminary and basics of the internal components and awareness aspects of the art.

I ask a year of any student because that’s what it takes to be able to take a form and cultivate a lasting and deep relationsip with the Tai Chi itself. In my experience, if you sincerely and consistently practice, the Tai Chi and energies themselves will slowly but surely grow and reveal themselves in your life and practice. However, you have to have the correct basis of understanding, body alignment, and rudimentary practice to develop the flow of Qi in the movements.

Otherwise you’re simply moving the body in a slow sort of dance and aren’t really practicing Tai Chi. You’d be just as well off doing any number of other things for exercise or would be better served by a different teacher.

I’d like to help you learn a practice that you can take with you and continue developing without me. I’d like to become obsolete to you after a year or two or three.
